As dengue death cases surge during the rainy season, the Department of Health (DOH) announced on Wednesday that a total of 396 people have died from the mosquito-borne disease this year. The alarming rise in cases has prompted health authorities to issue warnings and prepare for a possible dengue death.

Death Toll and Case Surge
According to the latest DOH data, 396 deaths were recorded from January 1 to August 10, 2024. Although this figure is slightly lower than the 421 deaths reported during the same period last year, the situation remains dire.

In addition to the death toll, there has been a significant increase in dengue death cases across the country. Between June 30 and July 13, 2024, there were 18,784 cases reported. This number surged by 24% to 23,290 cases between July 14 and July 27. However, a drop to 13,369 cases was recorded between July 28 and August 10, which the DOH attributes to possible late consultations and reporting.

Overall, a total of 150,354 dengue death cases have been documented nationwide from January 1 to August 10, representing a 39% increase compared to the 107,953 cases during the same period in 2023.

Regional Impact
The rise in dengue cases has affected nearly every region in the Philippines. The DOH reported that all regions, except for SOCCSKSARGEN, Zamboanga Peninsula, and Bicol Region, have seen an increase in cases over the recent three to four weeks leading up to August 10.

The spike in cases across various regions has raised concerns about the potential for further spread and the strain on healthcare facilities.

DOH’s Response and Warnings
Health Secretary Ted Herbosa expressed deep concern over the escalating situation. On Monday, he indicated that the number of dengue cases in the country had reached “outbreak levels” and that he is preparing to officially declare a dengue outbreak soon.

In response to the growing threat, the DOH has been actively reminding the public to adhere to the 4S strategy against dengue death . The 4S strategy includes:
Search and Destroy: Eliminate mosquito breeding places.
Secure Self-Protection: Wear protective clothing and use mosquito repellent.
Seek Early Consultation: Visit a healthcare facility immediately if dengue symptoms appear.
Support Fogging or Spraying: Participate in community efforts to fog or spray insecticides in hotspot areas, particularly during the rainy season.
The DOH emphasizes that these preventive measures are crucial in controlling the spread of dengue and reducing the number of cases and deaths.

Outlook
As the rainy season continues, the threat of dengue remains a serious public health concern. With nearly 400 deaths already reported this year, the DOH is intensifying its efforts to combat the disease and prevent further loss of life.

The public is urged to stay vigilant, practice the 4S strategy, and seek medical attention at the first sign of symptoms. The coming weeks will be critical in determining whether the country can effectively manage the outbreak and protect the population from this deadly disease.
